Frequently Asked Questions
MARYLAND MEMBERS' ANCESTRY PROJECT
(Md-MAP)

1. What is Md-MAP?  An electronic database of our current and past members' Maryland ancestry available on-line. Information includes only Birth/Marriage/Death (BMD) data.

2. What is the source of this information? There are two sources. (1) Data are obtained from paper pedigree charts submitted to the Society over the past 40 years or  (2) from current members' electronically submitted files. No information concerning living people will be placed on-line.

3. How can I participate? First, you must be a member in good-standing with the Maryland Genealogical Society. Secondly, you must submit a GEDCOM file of your data and agree to publication of this information. Anyone may visit our on-line database.

More information about GEDCOM files is available.

4. Which Ancestors are eligible? The progenitor ancestor or index case is defined as the first known ancestor to reside in Maryland. Begin your GEDCOM with this progenitor. All earlier generations are excluded. Any spouse and any known descendants from the progenitor may be included as long as no individual born after 1900 is part of the database (unless deceased).

5. What data are requested? Requested data are limited to (1) date and place of birth or baptism or christening, (2) date and place of marriage, (3) date and place of death or burial, (4) sources for all information. Sound documentation of submitted data is strongly encouraged.

6. Where do I submit my file? All data must be submitted electronically, preferably by an e-mail attachment to md-map@mdgensoc.org or alternatively send a CD or diskette by USPS to The Maryland Genealogical Society, 201 West Monument Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201, Attention: Md-MAP. Include your name, MdGenSoc number (if known) and a means of contact (preferably an e-mail address).

7. How can I opt out? If you have previously submitted a paper pedigree to the Society or an electronic GEDCOM but do now want any information placed on-line, send an e-mail to md-map@mdgensoc.org  include the message "opt out" and your Society number if known.

8. How do I make contact with a submitter?  Each file (GEDCOM) in Md-MAP is identified by the surname of the submitter and their MdGenSoc ID number. This information is found in every footnote in every file on-line. Send that information to md-map@mdgensoc.org to request the name of the submitter. If you want paper copies from our files (often these contain much more information than what is on-line) there may be a nominal charge for this service.
